WHO WE ARE
Founded in 1999, Maryland Coalition of Families (MCF) is a statewide nonprofit with a central office in Columbia, Md., and staff located in communities throughout the state.  Using personal experience as parents, caregivers, youth and other loved ones, we connect, support and empower Maryland’s families. Our staff provide one-to-one support to parents and caregivers of young people with mental health issues and to any loved one who cares for someone with a substance use or gambling issue. We also advocate to improve systems that impact individuals with behavioral health challenges.  

OVERVIEW

Maryland Coalition of Families (MCF) has a unique opportunity for a talented educator/trainer to develop, plan and implement grant-funded, state-wide annual programs in family leadership. All programs are specifically designed for parents and caregivers of school-aged children with mental health issues. Programs currently include:

  • Family Leadership Institute (FLI), a six-weekend program offered in a central location in Maryland
  • Family Leadership Retreats (FLRs), two weekend-long programs offered each fall and spring at different regions within the state

The Specialist must have personal experience as a parent or caregiver of a child with mental health issues and a strong desire to give back to this community. The Specialist must also have experience leading educational or training programs.

This part-time position reports to the Chief Operating Officer and will work closely with and have the support of MCF colleagues, including a Coordinator for Family Leadership Programs. While the work schedule will vary from week to week depending on program needs, the total number of hours for the year will average 15 hours per week. The Specialist will primarily telecommute, although they must attend some meetings in person and must be present for all weekend programs (eight weekends per year).

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Reviews and refines existing curriculum for FLI.
  • In collaboration with local MCF colleagues, plans program for FLRs.
  • Assures excellence and integrity in the content for all family leadership programs.
  • Creates a detailed agenda for each program, considering best practices in adult learning, flow, and integration/assimilation of content.
  • Vets, hires, and manages speakers.
  • Oversees the development of training materials.
  • Facilitates the eight weekend sessions for both FLI and FLR.
  • Provides consultation about recruitment and selection of participants and helps to create a diverse and robust cohort for each family leadership program.
  • Participates in promotional and evaluative activities for family leadership initiatives.
  • Contributes content for required reports, proposals, and other documents in relation to the family leadership initiatives.
QUALIFICATIONS
  • Personal, lived experience as a primary caregiver of a youth, adolescent or young adult who has/had intensive mental health needs is required.
  • Demonstrated success in educational program development and delivery.
  • Working knowledge of best practices in adult learning.
  • Strong public speaking and group facilitation skills.
  • Strong organizational skills, including effective time management and the ability to manage multiple priorities.
  • Cultural competence; must respect diversity in program participants, speakers, and MCF colleagues.
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, as well as proficiency with navigating the internet.
  • Bachelor degree preferred; Associate degree and a minimum of three years of relevant experience may be acceptable.
  • Experience with or willingness to learn how to use a database (Salesforce). 
  • Current Maryland driver’s license and access to own vehicle; in-state travel required. 
  • Successful completion of a background check (required for all MCF employees). 

Note: Preference will be given amongst equally qualified candidates to those who have graduated from MCF’s Family Leadership Institute or have participated in a regional MCF Family Leadership Retreat.

 

Hours/Compensation:

  • While the work schedule will vary from week to week depending on program needs, the total number of hours for the year will average 15 hours per week. The Specialist will primarily telecommute, although they must attend some meetings in person and must be present for all weekend programs (eight weekends per year).
  • Salary commensurate with experience.
