WHO WE ARE
Founded in 1999, Maryland Coalition of Families (MCF) is a statewide nonprofit with a central office in Columbia, Md., and staff located in communities throughout the state.  Using personal experience as parents, caregivers, youth and other loved ones, we connect, support and empower Maryland’s families. Our staff provide one-to-one support to parents and caregivers of young people with mental health issues and to any loved one who cares for someone with a substance use or gambling issue. We also advocate to improve systems that impact individuals with behavioral health challenges.  

OVERVIEW

MCF has a professional opportunity for a full-time Director of Finance. As a critical contributor to the state-wide leadership team, the Director will lead day-to-day finance operations of a $4.9 million budget, including functional responsibility over accounting, accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll, and grants reporting. This position will ensure that the organization has the systems and procedures in place to support effective program implementation and clean audits. Additionally, the Director of Finance will oversee fee-for-service billing operations and work closely with colleagues throughout MCF to support budget management. This position supervises a Grants and Contracts Analyst and a Junior Accountant. This position will report to the Executive Director and will be based in MCF’s central office in Columbia, Maryland.


Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

Finance and Accounting Leadership

  • Oversee all accounts, ledgers, and reporting systems ensuring compliance with appropriate GAAP standards and regulatory requirements.
  • Responsible for ongoing analysis of financial procedures and protocols to ensure work is organized, accurate and easily understood by members of the senior leadership team and others.
  • Maintain internal control and safeguards for cash receipts, purchases, and recording of revenue and expense; for program and organization budgeting; and for grants and contracts management.
  • Coordinate all audit activity.
  • Consistently analyze financial data and present financial reports in an accurate and timely manner; clearly communicate monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements; monitor progress and changes and keep senior leadership abreast of the organization’s financial status.
  • Assist the Executive Director and Chief Operating Officer with the annual budgeting and planning process; administer and review all financial plans and compare to actual results with a view to identify, explain, and correct variances as appropriate.
  • Support the Executive Director in engaging the Board’s Finance Committee around issues and trends in financial operating models and delivery.
  • Oversee all financial, project/program and grants accounting; ensure that internal accounting tools and expenditures are consistently aligned with grant and program budgets throughout the grant/fund period; collate financial reporting materials for government, corporate, and foundation grants.
  • Manage organizational cash flow forecasting.
  • Manage external billing for such programs as the 1915(i) Waiver.
  • Develop and maintain reports on the financial effectiveness of the programs.
  • Participate in staff hiring and orientation of new employees.
  • Conduct annual performance evaluations of direct report staff.

Team Leadership

  • Serve as member of MCF leadership team.
  • Provide leadership in developing financial strategy and implementing sound financial practices.
  • Promote a culture of fiscal literacy and management throughout the organization.

QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or related field is required, CPA and/or MBA is preferred.
  • Personal qualities of integrity, credibility, and commitment to the organization’s mission. A proactive, hands-on strategic thinker.
  • Extensive experience coordinating audit activities and managing reporting, budget development and analysis, accounts payable and receivable, general ledger and accounting for investments in the non-profit sector.
  • Relevant experience in compliance and reporting of government, corporate, and foundation grants.
  • Advanced knowledge of accounting and reporting software.
  • Keen analytic, organizational, and problem-solving skills, and capacity for strategic data interpretation and forecasting.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills; experience in effectively communicating trends and projections regarding fiscal data, including presentations to senior management, board of directors, and other outside partners.
  • Ability and desire to translate complex financial information to individuals at all levels including those without a finance background.
  • Self-driven, demonstrates initiative and is able to multitask and adapt to changing priorities in a small but fast-paced office.
  • Successful completion of a background check (required for all MCF employees upon hire). 

Hours/Compensation:

  • Exempt.  Full-time 40 hours/week
  • Salary commensurate with experience.
