Founded in 1999, Maryland Coalition of Families (MCF) is a statewide nonprofit with a central office in Columbia, Md., and staff located in communities throughout the state.  Using personal experience as parents, caregivers, youth and other loved ones, we connect, support and empower Maryland’s families. Our staff provide one-to-one support to parents and caregivers of young people with mental health issues and to any loved one who cares for someone with a substance use or gambling issue. We also advocate to improve systems that impact individuals with behavioral health challenges. 


Overview

The Maryland Coalition of Families (MCF) is hiring a part-time Youth Peer Support Specialist for Prince George’s County. The Youth Peer Support Specialist will be a young adult (18-26 years old) with lived experience as a consumer of behavioral health services, and will serve as a youth leader in Prince George’s County.

The Youth Peer Support Specialist for the Prince George’s County System of Care (SOC) team empowers youth in Prince Georges County by providing support, outreach and education, training, and social opportunities.  The primary activities are the facilitation of peer support group meetings and assisting with the implementation of a Youth Advisory Council.  Members have experience in one or more child-serving systems, including mental health, the Department of Juvenile Services and the Department of Social Services.  The Prince George’s youth program also works to reduce stigma and encourage youth involvement in improving services for youth and young adults.

 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Assists with the implementation of the Youth Advisory Council for Prince George’s County and coordinates with other youth initiatives in Maryland, including Youth MOVE, On Our Own and other groups that may be identified. Maintains responsibility for all functions related to development and implementation of the Youth Advisory Council.
  • Attends Taking Flight meetings as needed and contributes creative ideas and popular trends into Taking Flight’s outreach and training, utilizing social media and other applications where appropriate.
  • Leads the planning and implementation of monthly Peer Support Groups and various youth activities throughout the year, with a minimum of twelve (12) Peer Support Group events/meetings each year.
  • Attends other meetings as requested by MCF and the Prince George’s County SOC Management Team, including SOC Core Team Meetings.
  • Attends relevant trainings and conferences to stay abreast of issues related to youth and young adults in relation to behavioral health needs.
  • Collaborates with youth and young adults in other systems throughout Maryland through ongoing contact and attendance at trainings or conferences to become aware of the similarities and challenges for youth in other systems.
  • Works in partnership with the Prince George’s County System of Care (SOC) staff, Core Service Agency (CSA) staff, and other family-serving organizations to identify youth to be involved in SOC Core Team, committees, and other SOC activities.  

Qualifications

  • Young adult with lived experience as a consumer of mental health/and/or substance use services.
  • Knowledge of Prince George’s neighborhoods, businesses, and recreation opportunities preferred.
  • Able to work a flexible schedule, including nights and/or weekends as needed.
  • Able to work with youth and families from diverse cultural, religious, racial and economic backgrounds.
  • Experience with social media and able to follow MCF’s guidelines to safely use social media in promotion, outreach, and education.
  • Able to work independently and communicate effectively with a remote supervisor.
  • Ability to reach and build relationships with child-focused agencies in Prince George’s County.
  • Current Maryland driver’s license and access to own vehicle.  Ability to travel throughout Prince George’s County for various meetings/events and to the MCF office in Columbia.
  • Successful completion of a background check is required for all MCF employees.
 

Hours/Compensation

  • Part-Time/10 hours per week
  • Flexible work schedule
  • Salary: $11.50/hour
