Who We Are

Founded in 1999, Maryland Coalition of Families (MCF) is a statewide nonprofit with a central office in Columbia, Md., and staff located in communities throughout the state.  Using personal experience as parents, caregivers, youth and other loved ones, we connect, support and empower Maryland’s families. Our staff provide one-to-one support to parents and caregivers of young people with mental health issues and to any loved one who cares for someone with a substance use or gambling issue. We also advocate to improve systems that impact individuals with behavioral health challenges. 

 

Overview

Maryland Coalition of Families has a full-time (40 hour/week) employment opportunity for an Accountant in our Columbia office.  This position supports all Finance Department functions including general ledger, account reconciliation and analysis, financial reporting and billing, accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll, and fee-for-service accounting.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Performs tasks associated with the monthly financial close, including the preparation of account analyses and financial reports.
  • Performs account reconciliations.
  • Accounts Payable - reviews vendor invoices and other payment requests for proper coding, approval and accuracy; processes payments.
  • Payroll - Processes bi-weekly payroll, employee mileage and expense reimbursements; monitors employee leave balances; ensures accuracy of employee time-sheets and payroll grant allocations.
  • Assists with the preparation of timely invoices based on grant requirements, posting of cash receipts, preparation of bank deposits, maintenance of grant files and the collection of outstanding balances.
  • Manages fee-for-service billing process, including claims preparation and submission, resubmission and collection; maintains accurate billing records for all claims processed and pending; reconciles denials and follows up with vendors as needed.
  • Purchases customized goods and services for youth in wraparound programs; manages related monitoring, tracking and reporting of purchases.

Qualifications

  • Prefer 2-3 years of accounting experience.
  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting or Finance
  • Understanding of cost allocations and departmental accounting.
  • Strong attention to detail.
  • Experience using accounting software, preferably QuickBooks.
  • Strong organizational and interpersonal skills.
  • Experience with grant accounting and payroll is preferred but not required.
  • Ability to work independently, anticipate issues and prioritize assignments.
  • Flexibility and adaptability to changing systems and processes. 
  • Proficiency in the use of Microsoft Office Excel and Word.
  • Successful completion of a background check (required for all MCF employees)
Note: As Maryland’s family support organization, MCF will give preference amongst equally qualified candidates to those who are primary caregivers of a youth, adolescent or young adult with behavioral health or substance use needs.
 

Hours/Compensation

  • 40 hours/week.
  • Salary commensurate with experience.
